    On Saturday, February 27, 2016, Houston Academy hosted its first Bilingual parent/teacher workshop from 8:30a.m. until 10:30a.m. Invitation flyers were sent home both in English and in Spanish. Parents of our Bilingual classes were invited to attend about 25 people were in attendance, including parents and children.

    Sixth grade in Ms. Jackson’s math students were exploring possibilities and expressing their passions for Math mastery in a flipped classroom environment. Students transitioned from text awareness, to whole group/partner discussion and then on to guided practice of processes followed by exploration using Chromebooks in their Google Classroom forum.

    Houston Academy’s students were given an opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13). Every student logged in for one hour and learn about coding. Hour of code allowed the staff and students to see how the video games that they play work in the background.

    Students were able to hear the Airmen speak about what it was like to serve their country while fighting prejudice, not only at home, but in the military itself. The Airmen gave the children advice and encouragement about their duty as the leaders of the future, and how to be the best they can be.     Houston Academy is thrilled to announce the promotion of Dr. Shelby-King as principal and Mr. Victor Nash as assistant principal. Dr. Shelby-King began her teaching career in North Forest ISD. She transferred to Aldine ISD from Lewisville ISD in the fall of 1999. She taught at Stovall Middle School before being promoted to an Educational Service Manager at Eisenhower Senior High. Dr. Shelby-King has been in the Magnet Schools since 2002 where she served as Assistant Principal at Drew Academy prior to coming to Houston Academy as Assistant Principal. She is committed to meeting the total needs of all students and ensuring teaches are equipped with the best instructional practices to maximize student growth in an environment conducive for learning. Houston Academy is blessed to have her wonderful leadership!

    Young Audience of Houston: Impande Ye Africa performed The Children of Africa

    Houston Academy enjoyed an exciting celebration to Black History with the performance of Impande Ye Africa from Young Audiences of Houston. Impande Ye Africa, meaning “The Root of Africa”, is a theatre production and performing arts company founded in 2012, which produces and presents African centered dance forms and contemporary works of art. Its emphasis is on cultivating and educating audiences of all cultures about the richness of the African cultural expression as provided through storytelling, dance, theatre, and music. Their performance of The Children of Africa was an energetic, educational program using songs, dances, drumming and games to illustrate natural sources that were used by children of South Africa as they do their daily chores and played their games. It was exciting to see our students and teachers participating on and off stage! Young Audiences of Houston is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring children through the arts, making the arts an integral part of the school curriculum, and advancing the field of arts in education through professional development workshops and community partnerships.

    On February 14, 2015, the Houston Hawk basketball teams competed in an Intermediate school basketball tournament at Nimitz High school. We have 2 boys' teams and a girls' team. Each of our teams made it past the first round of tournament play. Our Boys A Team, made it to the finals only to lose by 2 points.     Sing4Life - A Celebration of Singing by Children

    The Aldine Children’s Honor Choir was invited to be the featured guest choir to perform with Houston Boychoir, Houston’s Premiere Professional Boychoir. Sing 4 Life, A Celebration of Singing by Children was held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church. Each choir individually performed songs with phenomenal singing. At the end of the concert, there were 150 young people raising their voices in song. Houston Academy was represented by Kevin Sanchez, Andres Rico, Carrington Brice, Gianna Benjamin, Fatima De la Rosa, Bryan Flores, and Anaya Jones. Mrs. Courtnay Holiday, Choir Director at Houston Academy, serves as the Aldine Children’s Honor Choir accompanist.
