Our Mission:

The mission of the Houston Academy English Language Arts Department is to help young people become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers. We accomplish this goal through research, curriculum development, and working shoulder-to-shoulder with students, teachers, and school leaders. The Teachers College Reading Writing Project (TCRWP) has developed state-of-the-art tools and methods for teaching reading and writing, using performance assessments and learning progressions to accelerate progress, and for literacy-rich content-area instruction.


Student Expectations:

  • Be full participants in Reading and Writing workshop

  • Keep a reading log with the number of minutes read each night

  • Complete take-home writing assignments

  • Work with assigned partners and book clubs

  • Be a life-long learner
