History of Houston Academy

Jewell Houston “STARS" Academy is a magnet school for Math, Science and Fine Arts.  Houston Academy opened its doors in August of 2003 in the Acres Home are of Houston, Texas in Aldine ISD. The Academy's namesake Mrs. Jewell S. Houston, though small in stature, is a quiet giant whose words, example and life touches hundreds of kids each year. She has served as a mother, teacher and community icon and matriarch of the Acres Home Community. The Academy serves fifth and sixth grade students from a wide range of academic proficiency, including students with disabilities and Limited English Proficiency. Our goal is to provide an enriched educational environment in which students expand their academic abilities, develop an appreciation of the arts, and increase their positive attitudes and self-image through Houston Academy’s Math, Science and Fine Arts programs.

The research-based reading, math, science, and fine arts curriculum is built on content, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the Aldine ISD Reading, Math, and Science benchmarks. Our reading, math, and science curriculum provides the foundation for all students to become problem solvers, critical thinkers, and productive citizens. The fine arts curriculum includes classes such as: Art, Graphics Design, Dance, Drama, Cello, Violin, and Vocal Music.

As part of our magnet program, Houston Academy students are given many additional opportunities to explore Math, Science and Fine Arts outside of the traditional classroom setting. Students spend approximately three hours per week in the Techno Stars Lab. In this state-of-the-art Science and Technology facility, hands-on learning activities bring esoteric concepts into real- world applications. Using probes, scanners, video editing equipment, pneumatic equipment and computer programs, scientific investigations become an enhanced life and learning experience. While walking and touring Houston Academy, one will visualize and experience the integration of Math, Science, and Fine Arts together making our magnet school an excellent school of choice.
