On Saturday, February 27, 2016, Houston Academy hosted its first Bilingual parent/teacher workshop from 8:30a.m. until 10:30a.m. Invitation flyers were sent home both in English and in Spanish. Parents of our Bilingual classes were invited to attend about 25 people were in attendance, including parents and children. IT WAS A VERY REWARDING TWO HOURS FOR ALL ATTENDEES! There were door prizes and activity prizes, free continental breakfast, and thank you school packs for the students who participated by coming with their parents. All parents eagerly participated in an “all hands-on workshop” to share with the learning their child’s experiences here at JHA. Energized Bilingual parents rotated from amongst four centers—math, science, social studies, and reading to learn various learning strategies we teach and emphasize to help students experience success in their learning and to further understand our expectations of them via the District’s Academic Curriculum. Parents were very impressed! Some comments we heard were, “Why didn’t you guys do this earlier in the year?” I would love to come to another one of these workshops”. “I really learned a lot from this today”. “When are we having another one of these workshops?” Of course, all of these comments were in Spanish. We thank Mr. Nash, Assistant Principal, Ms. Garvey-Preyer, Bilingual Teacher and her Bilingual assistant, Mrs. R. Munguia for spear heading this grand event. However, this could not have been as successful without the help of our teachers who also participated in the planning of this event to helped make this day a very successful: Mr. Anderson, Ms. M. Richardson, Dr. Jeanlouis, Ms. Warren, Ms. McCullum-Jackson, and Mr. Code. Special thanks to Mr. Hill for his technical support. We also thank Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Davila for their support. We at Houston Academy are looking forward to our next Bilingual Parent/teacher workshop. We are so glad that we were able to pull in so many Bilingual parents at this first workshop!
